How to Decide What to Keep, Donate, or Throw Away

The Decision Framework

The hardest part of decluttering isn't the physical work, it's making decisions. Use this framework to confidently sort your belongings into three categories.

Keep If...

  • You've used it in the past 12 months
  • It serves a specific, current purpose
  • It has genuine sentimental value (not just guilt)
  • It would be expensive or difficult to replace if needed
  • It's a legal or financial document you need to retain

Donate If...

  • It's in good, usable condition
  • Someone else could benefit from it
  • It's clothing that no longer fits but isn't worn out
  • It's a working appliance or electronic you've upgraded from
  • It's books, games, or toys your family has outgrown

Throw Away If...

  • It's broken beyond reasonable repair
  • It's stained, torn, or otherwise unusable
  • It's expired (food, medications, beauty products)
  • It's a safety hazard
  • No donation center would accept it

When In Doubt

If you're truly stuck on an item, put it in a "decision box." Seal it, date it, and store it for 3 months. If you don't open the box in that time, donate or discard the contents without looking inside.
